Opentrons Flex Absorbance Plate Reader Module is a fully automated solution based on absorbance measurement. It can detect absorbance in the range of 400-1000 nm and is suitable for a wide range of uses including protein quantification, sample standardization, cell activity detection and bacterial growth monitoring.

This module implements complete unattended automation, and high-throughput data collection is possible without manual intervention. Working with Opentrons Flex Gripper, it automates every step from reagent preparation to plate transfer to measurement, ensuring consistent and repeatable results.

  • How to export or analyze data?

    Data for absorbance readings can be exported from the run log in CSV file format for downstream analysis or integration into LIMS or custom processes.

  • Does the Flex absorbance plate reading module support temperature control or shaking?

    No, the current module does not contain temperature adjustment or shaking functions. You can use the Flex fixture to move the plate to the Opentrons temperature module or the Opentrons heated shaker module to perform these functions.

  • What applications are the Flex absorbance plate reading modules best suited?

    The Flex absorbance plate reading module is ideal for cell viability assays (typical wavelength = 450 nm), protein quantification (562 nm), cell growth assays (600 nm), and enzyme activity assays (650 nm).

  • Can I use this module for kinetics?

    Yes. Although it is not a complete spectrophotometer, it supports the ability to measure endpoint and kinetics over time on experiments such as growth curves or enzyme kinetics.

  • Is the module calibrated or does it require user calibration?

    The module is precalibrated when shipped out of the factory and does not require regular calibration by the user. However, if necessary, you can use the reference standard for verification.

  • Can the Flex absorbance board reading module be integrated into Flex's automated workflow?

    Yes. The board reader is fully integrated with the Flex platform and can be incorporated into automated workflows using the Opentrons protocol and software tools including the Opentrons Python API, the Opentrons protocol designer, and OpentronsAI.

  • What wavelength ranges does the Flex absorbance plate reading module cover?

    The board reader comes standard with filters, supporting the following wavelengths: 450 nm, 562 nm, 600 nm and 650 nm. Custom wavelengths between 400 and 1000 nm can also be ordered.

  • What types of boards are compatible with the Flex absorbance plate reading module?

    This module supports standard flat bottom 96-well plates that comply with ANSI/SBS standards.
